"For those who wander away from the centre, from the Source, from the Lord, the situation becomes increasingly complicated, until it is inextricable. For as soon as they begin to veer off course, to stray from the light and transgress laws, claiming it makes them feel free and independent, all they are really doing is fettering themselves, even if they don’t see it at the time. Let’s take an image. During the summer, the sun shone, the weather was hot and life was very simple. But now winter is approaching; we have to provide for heating and lay in supplies; we need more clothing, more lighting. And then there’s the fog, the snow and ice, communications aren’t as good, and there’s a greater risk of accidents. So, with less light and less heat, everything becomes more difficult. If you can take this very simple image deeper, it will help you understand how necessary it is to sustain your connection with the spiritual sun, the Lord."

"St. Paul defines faith as ‘the conviction of things not seen.’ And faith does give us access to an unknown, infinitely vast world, in which we can begin to breathe, nourish ourselves and become stronger. We gradually become aware of realms that were hitherto unknown to us, and then we know. That is why we should not set faith and knowledge in opposition to each other; they belong together: faith opens the way to new knowledge. You could say that faith is the infinite and that knowledge maps out a small territory within that infinite. Faith makes soundings in the infinite, explores it, connects us with it and allows us to enter ever deeper into it. And so our knowledge of the divine grows and increases, thanks to our faith. Faith always precedes knowledge; it is faith that allows us to move forward. In order to know, we first have to believe, but when we know, we no longer need to believe; faith then carries us towards a new field of investigation. And so it is that faith little by little leads us to perfect knowledge."

"Nature exhibits an amazing diversity of forms, but on the other hand we see a great similarity between individuals belonging to the same species. Take trees, for example… Oaks, poplars, fig trees – how different the shapes of their leaves are! Whereas, the leaves from the same tree are all alike. Look at fishes, too, and insects – how many different species and forms there are! But can you distinguish between one fly and another from the same species? Now, if you compare the faces of several people who have a strong spiritual life, you will find a real difference and wealth of expression! But look at crude, primitive people who have no inner life; their expressions are identical. On the one hand you have simplification, and on the other, differentiation. The higher we rise, the more simplified and unified we become, but also the more expressive, vibrant, alive and subtle. And the further we descend into the lower realms, the more forms multiply, but the more individuals lose their expressiveness."

"Why have we come to incarnate on earth? In order to know ourselves. For human beings do not know themselves as spirit, as a spark that flew from the bosom of the Creator. They know themselves in the divine world, above, but they also have to know themselves below, through matter, and they only succeed in this after many trials and tribulations. Have you seen a cat play with its tail? Not knowing this is what it is, it bites it and is surprised at what it feels. And, like the cat, one day you too come to discover the existence of the extremity of your being, there on the physical plane; you don’t know what it is, so you bite, and of course you cry out, because you realize the tail that’s trailing along is a part of you. Human beings are not limited to what you see of them; they are entities that inhabit all realms of space, and they have to learn who they are. At present, they have to get to know themselves through matter, through their physical body, and that is what makes their life so difficult but also so worth living."

"When we study the history of humanity, we become aware that religions have been the cause of the greatest rifts, because they have too limited a concept of the Divinity. People speak of the Jewish God, the Muslim God, the Christian God, as if there were several Gods, and even just among Christians there are so many divisions and misunderstandings!... But a true religion can only be a universal one, one that concerns not just certain peoples or certain nations but the whole world. So, as from now we need to go further and turn to the universal Principle, the origin of all religions. The symbol for this universal religion is the sun. All religions come from the sun and are branches of the solar religion. Before human beings appeared, the sun already existed, and every day it tells them again and again, ‘Do not concern yourselves with the small differences there may be between you. Do as I do: give your light, your warmth and your life to all creatures!’"

"Some teachers and even parents, exasperated by the behaviour of the children in their care, will look daggers at them, unaware that these children will remember such looks of hatred all their life. Although children may not understand, they are sensitive, and they can feel what is in a look. A slap or a spanking, if needed, can do them no harm, but be mindful of how you look at them. Children soon forget they have been slapped or spanked, but they will never forget a nasty look. Occasionally, parents with particularly difficult children have come to me for advice, and I have told them, ‘If you have to punish a child who’s done something wrong, speak to them gently and with kindness in your eyes. Tell them they are going to be punished, because there are rules you can do nothing about; even cry with them, if you have to, and then go ahead and smack them! The child will understand they are not being punished out of malice but to teach them there are laws that cannot be evaded. This way you are instilling into their mind true notions of justice.’"

"The power of speech resides not only in our words but in the vibrations of our voice. In the ancient Mysteries, magic words were taught only to those disciples who were worthy of knowing them and able to utter them. According to one tradition, when a human being comes before the supreme Judges, they order him or her, ‘Speak’. He or she then moves forward and says, ‘Forms of eternity, here I am,’ and immediately they know what judgment to give. This may be merely an image used to make a point, but do take it seriously all the same. When it is your time to come before the Judges of souls, they will say, ‘Speak.’ And however eloquently you express yourself, however well chosen your words, that is not what the Judges will be paying attention to, because they know words can deceive. They will only listen to the timbre of your voice, to its vibrations. It is the sound of your voice that will tell them whether what you say is true or false; you will be judged according to how genuine your voice is."

"So many people are proud of rejecting all authority and claim they don’t need anybody’s advice or guidance in life. Well, they’re mistaken we all need guides. If we really want to blossom, if we really want salvation, we need to understand how important it is to be guided by the great minds who have lived, or still live, on the earth. These beings, who have studied, who have experienced so much more than we have, who know life so much better, who have solved so many problems before us, are like living books communicating to us the knowledge they possess. We live, we act, we think, but thanks to them something else is added to our own experiences, something higher and richer than us that helps us."

" ‘By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken.’ These are the words in Genesis that God addresses to Adam after the fall. But now a new light is entering the world to return meaning to all human activity, and that light conveys a different understanding of the word ‘work’. Whether your pursuits are intellectual, artistic or physical, or even if you’re just resting or going for a walk, you should avoid anything that might resemble stagnation and create within yourself a state of ordered and harmonious activity. True work consists in bringing all inner and outer currents and energies into harmony, so they converge towards the Source of life, the prime Cause. The disciple must see ‘work’ solely from this point of view."

"Sometimes you meet quite ordinary people who claim to be entrusted with some grand mission. They don’t possess any special ability or gift, but they are convinced heaven has chosen them to put the world back to rights or bring about a new religion. You wonder what put such ideas into their head. Of course, we were all given a mission when we came to earth. But it remains for us to find out what it is. ‘What mission?’ you’ll ask. To develop all the seeds of qualities and virtues heaven has deposited within us. And this is quite a task in itself! How long will it be, how many centuries, how many thousands of years, before we succeed in uncovering and bringing forth all the riches we carry within us! Now, heaven may well choose a being for some particular mission. But the collective mission for humans is to develop little by little until they reach perfection. However puny and unimpressive they may be, they do have a mission to fulfil: to work, to better themselves and to evolve."
